Rolo Pecan Candies {DIY Turtles}
Simple recipes are always helpful around the holidays, especially if they’re simple recipes that can be used for gift giving too. Today’s recipe certainly falls into that category because you get to cheat a little bit with easy ingredients and yet still create yummy candies that are a perfect addition to a festive plate of treats.
These candies are a quick combo of pretzels, Rolo candies and pecans. The chocolate and caramel Rolo candies combined with the pecans gives you some of the same flavors as Turtle candies but without all the effort. Instead you just melt them together on a pretzel which adds a little bit of tasty salty flavor too.
For many years I’ve made my Hershey Hug/M & M candies which uses this same type of method so I knew this Rolo Pecan recipe would be easy to do too and would be a fun way to change up the flavors from my familiar recipe up a little bit.
To begin, you lay out some pretzels on cookie sheets. I used the square waffle pretzels, but other small pretzels could work too. You then put an unwrapped Rolo candy on top of each pretzel. (The most time consuming part of this recipe is unwrapping all the candies!)
Then the cookie sheets with the pretzels and Rolos are put into a 250 degree oven for 4 minutes. When you take them out of the oven, the Rolo candies will be warm and soft but still retaining their shape.
The final step is to press a pecan half onto each candy, which squishes the chocolate out around the pecan a little bit too. Then you let everything cool. Final result – you made your own candies without much effort at all!
These little candies are just the thing if you’re looking for something simple to make, and yet still want something a little special and indulgent. They’re a great mix of sweet and salty – one of my favorite combos that I always find hard to resist!
