Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend

I learned many years ago that you could make your own pumpkin pie spice blend by just mixing together four common household spices. I started off by just making 1 teaspoon of DIY pumpkin pie spice at a time, and then increased it to a 1 tablespoon size batch of DIY pumpkin pie spice. And now finally and at long last I decided to make homemade pumpkin pie spice in a larger batch that I could keep on hand for using in a few more recipes.

How I Make My Own Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix

This new larger version uses the same four spices as my other smaller batches. It’s a simple combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. The cinnamon and nutmeg make up the largest portion of the mix, with smaller amounts of the ginger and cloves adding in hints of their flavors.

For many of my spice blends, I like to use just one measuring tool if possible to make the whole process speed along easily. For this pumpkin pie spice recipe, I’m only using my teaspoon and the ratios in the blend look like this:

6 teaspoons ground cinnamon
4 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves

Once the spices are measured out and combined, I transfer the mix to a small spice bottle. I’m often thrifty and recycle the bottles from other spices I’ve used up. I clean off the old labels with my homemade goo gone, and then they’re ready to have one of my new blends stored in them instead.

And when I add a label to my recycled spice jar, I usually put the label on the lid of the jar. I keep my spice blends in a basket on an upper cupboard shelf and when I need to use one, I pull the whole basket off the shelf. It’s so much easier to find the homemade spice blend I’m looking for in the basket if the label is on the top of the jar!

Ideas For Using DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend

So now that we have our handy-dandy homemade spice blend stirred together and ready to go, what shall we do with it?

One of the most traditional things to do is to make a pumpkin pie. You can combine a 15 oz jar of pumpkin puree, a 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk, 2 eggs, and 1 tablespoon of your pumpkin pie spice blend, and you’ll have a very tasty and easy pumpkin pie filling. The baking instructions for this mixture are on the recipe card in my post for the 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice batch.

I also use this mixture in my pumpkin energy bites recipe, using a teaspoon of this blend.

And finally, you can give these pumpkin spice cookies a try – a very tasty fall treat!
