Vegetable Seasoning Spice Blend

Make your own vegetable seasoning spice blend - a money saver that tastes great on any grilled or cooked vegetables.

Many months ago I wrote about some ideas for homemade popcorn seasonings, one of which was a savory blend with a main ingredient of celery salt. As time went by though, something happened.  I wasn’t using this blend on my popcorn anymore, and instead found myself ALWAYS using it on my vegetables!

I started out sprinkling it over my green beans (yummy!) and then started using it more and more for grilled vegetables.  The celery salt in the mixture just seems to pair really well with vegetable flavors which makes total sense.  Celery is a vegetable after all. 🙂

It took me a long time to use up the first batch of this seasoning blend so I’ve now adjusted the recipe to make a slightly smaller batch, I’ve changed a few of the ingredients to add a couple more of my favorite spices, and we now think of it as our homemade seasoning for vegetables.

{ Sorry popcorn – it’s back to butter and salt for you }

Making your own spice blends continues to be one of my favorite ways to save a little money with homemade cooking with the bonus of being able to use lots of great spice flavors.  Spice blends mix together fast, they can be used in different ways and in different recipes, and you can customize them with the spices of your choice.  For instance so many of the premade seasoning packets from the store seem to be very heavy on salt but if that’s something you want to cut back on, you can make your own spice blends and adjust the salt to fit your own taste and needs.

Here’s how to do it:

Vegetable Seasoning Spice Blend

Ingredients:

  • 4 teaspoons celery salt
  • 3 teaspoons dried parsley flakes
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground sage

Combine all ingredients and store in a small spice shaker jar or other small covered container.

As mentioned above, we like to use this blend on grilled vegetables.  My favorite combo is to chop up some zucchini, some yellow squash, and some golden potatoes (skin and all) into bite size pieces and put them in our handy grill pan that I bought a few years ago.

Then I drizzle some olive oil over the chopped vegetables, sprinkle this seasoning blend generously over everything, and stir to mix.  After about 20 minutes on the grill, stirring occasionally, the vegetables are soft and ready to eat and have a tasty boost of flavor too!

    1. Yes, it definitely works on veggies roasted in the oven too, and I have also used in some skillet type dishes on the stovetop.
