This holiday season I’ve been working on mini-sized projects not only because they’re usually quicker to make, but they’re often a really cute version of the bigger sized original – – kind of like how kittens are the super duper cute version of cats.

And just as kittens are to cats, so is this little 4 oz mason jar to the bigger quart size. Such a cute little version of the original!

The 4 oz mason jars come in a 4 pack and are more likely to be sold in craft stores than in food stores.  I bought mine at Hobby Lobby and I’ve also seen them for sale at my local JoAnn Fabric. These little jars come with metal screw-on lids too which is super nice. BUT, what can you put in such a little jar?

You can layer a single size serving of a homemade hot chocolate mix, and it fits perfectly. And as mentioned above, it’s little  . . . and cute. 🙂  And it’s fun to layer stuff in jars!

I first saw this idea when Pioneer Woman shared it on an episode of her television show, and she then put the little hot chocolate jars in a care package for someone away at college. But rather than use her recipe, I wanted to adapt my own homemade hot chocolate mix so I did the math and came up with my own tiny version.

These little jars are a cute homemade idea for a hostess gift or to add to a gift basket of other treats and they can be made in just a few minutes with a wee bit of measuring.

Here’s how to do it:

Single Size Layered Hot Chocolate Mix

Ingredients for one jar:

  • 2 Tablespoons Dry Milk Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Nesquick Drink Mix
  • 2 teaspoons Powdered Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Powdered Creamer
  • 10 Miniature Marshmallows

Layer the ingredients in a 4 oz miniature mason jar, beginning with the dry milk powder on the bottom, followed by the Nesquick, the  powdered sugar, and the creamer (you may find a small funnel to be helpful). Add the mini marshmallows on the top.

Screw the top on the jar and add a label with instructions to mix the contents of the jar with a mug of hot water (about 6 oz to 8 oz of water). A little bow for decoration is a fun touch too.

And here’s a couple more ideas for layered gifts in jars:
