Make Your Own Dawn Powerwash Spray Refill
My curiosity finally got the better of me. For many months I’d been wanting to try the Dawn Powerwash dish spray but the price always stopped me. But then it was on sale, and I had a coupon, so I trotted home with a bottle to give it a try. And I liked it – liked it a whole lot actually. A dish soap that you can spray is super handy. But when my bottle was gone and it was time to buy a refill, I was stopped again. Darn, those refills are expensive too. Time to make my own Dawn Powerwash refill!
Let’s Make Homemade Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray
Much of the value in the Dawn Powerwash is in the sprayer itself. It’s a clever way to deliver some aerated bubbles of watered down dish soap onto your dirty dishes. In fact the first ingredient listed on their bottle is water! But another ingredient listed is denatured alcohol and it’s thought that this ingredient helps the mixture foam as well as add some cleaning power. With those ingredients in mind we can create a homemade Dawn spray recipe.
We’ll be using Distilled water in our recipe. Distilled water is pure H2O so there are no hard water minerals to interfere with cleaning. We’ll also be adding some Isopropyl Alcohol, and I decided to use the 91% for extra strength. Finally, we’ll be adding some Dawn Dish soap. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Pour Distilled Water Into the Bottle
Begin by adding 1-3/4 cups of the distilled water to the empty Powerwash bottle that you want to refill. Adding the water first (rather than last) keeps the soap from foaming up too much when that ingredient is added. A funnel will make the job easier too!
Step 2: Add Isopropyl Alcohol
Next Add in 1 tablespoon of Isopropyl Alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol). I like to use the higher strength 91% alcohol but you can also use the lower strength alcohol if that’s what you have on hand. I like to keep the 91% alcohol around because I use it to make my homemade hand sanitizer too!
Step 3: Add Dawn Dish Soap
Now we’ll add our dish soap to the bottle. We’ll be adding 4 Tablespoons of Dawn dish soap. Once again, we’re adding this at the end to lessen the amount of bubbles that could suds up as we’re making our refill.
Step 4: Top off with a bit more Distilled Water
The 1-3/4 cup of distilled water we put in the bottle first is a good starting measurement for getting the water in there first, but you’ll notice at this point in mixing your ingredients that it doesn’t quite fill the bottle to the top. That’s why I like to finish by “topping it off”, and adding just a bit more distilled water to fill it a little closer to the top.
Step 5: Screw the top back on and start using your DIY Powerwash Refill!
The spray nozzles of the Dawn Powerwash dish spray bottles twist on and off quite easily. So once your homemade refill is complete, simply twist the nozzle back on, gently tip the bottle back and forth to mix the ingredients, and you can begin using your new frugal homemade Dawn dish spray!
My experience so far has been that this DIY refill is working very well. It sprays around in the same way and gets my dishes clean – AND – it makes my sink shiny too in the same way the store-bought version did.
How Frugal is our DIY Powerwash Spray?
Now for all the frugal folks, let’s do some math! Are we saving money by making our own Powerwash spray refill? Yes, indeed we are. When you look at the per batch cost of our refill, we’re actually saving a lot. First, let’s look at how much each of our ingredients cost per ounce:
128 oz Distilled Water @ $1.39 = 1¢ per ounce
32 oz 91% Isopropyl Alcohol @ $4.19 = 13¢ per ounce
5.8 oz Dawn dish soap @ $1.09 = 18¢ per ounce
Now, how much of each of these ingredients did we use in our mixture? My calculations are:
14 ounces of Distilled water = 14¢
1 Tablespoon Alcohol = 7¢
4 Tablespoons Dawn = 36¢
DIY Batch Total of 57¢ vs. Store bought refill of $4.19 – That’s a savings of 86% !
The prices at your local store might differ a bit from mine, but even with slight variations this is still a money-saving mixture. It should cost you less than a dollar per batch to make and still give you good cleaning results too. And those are great reasons to make your own!

Genius! I was skeptical but bought the Powerwash and liked using the spray. Once empty, I tried your recipe for the refill and it works exactly the same! However, I did substitute 80% vodka for the 91% iso alcohol. I’m hoping this will not alter results. Anyway, so far so good.
I love love love your website! I’m always finding good stuff to try out. Thanks for continuing with it.
Vodka can be used for a cleaner, so I think your substitution will work!
I use this to spray on greasy stains on jeans or spots on clothes before washing. Spray, rub it in a bit, and let it rest for a few hours. Wash as usual, stains GONE
You must be living in the US where everything is cheaper than here in Canada. I would have to price things out properly before deciding to buy all the constituents for the spray. I usually buy a pack of 3 at Costco and that works out cheaper than buying a single bottle at a time.
Yes, I am in the US and you may indeed see different ingredient prices where you live. But often times if you think in terms of the “per batch” cost when you only need a bit of each ingredient for a recipe, it’s still usually cheaper even though you may have paid more money up front to originally buy the ingredients (such as the cost of a bottle of 91% alcohol, but only a tablespoon will be used).
Hi Bev,
I’ve had mixed thoughts about Powerwash but haven’t made a decision yet. We haven’t used it consistently so I guess it’s time to put it out on the counter so we will remember.
I do have a question, the answer to which is probably buried somewhere deep in my 80 year old brain, what is the purpose of the alcohol?
Thanks for the recipe,
Sheila
When I did a little research on this (because alcohol is one of the ingredients listed on the Dawn Powerwash), it’s thought that this ingredient helps with the foaming and also adds a boost of cleaning power. I hope you enjoy the recipe if you decide to give it a try!
Interesting, thanks Beverly.
