I’ve made my share of homemade hand and body scrubs over the years. They’re such a simple way to give your skin a bit of pampering and they only take a few minutes to stir together. I’ve made cinnamon sugar scrub and citrus scrub, but more recently I’m making things even easier. Now I’m down to just 2 ingredients!

Using Liquid (Fractionated) Coconut Oil In A Sugar Scrub

The “new to me” ingredient that I’m loving for this 2-ingredient sugar scrub is liquid coconut oil, sometimes also called fractionated coconut oil. Normally coconut oil is solid at room temperature. Even if it’s melted to make a sugar scrub, there’s the chance it could harden up again and change the consistency of your final mixture.

But the liquid coconut oil stays in liquid form all the time! You can use it in your sugar scrubs without worry – AND- you get a lovely coconut scent too. This keeps your homemade sugar scrub recipe to just 2 ingredients with no need of essential oils or other ingredients for fragrance.

Mixing together a homemade sugar scrub

For this recipe I’m using 3/4 cup of white sugar. White sugar provides some abrasiveness for exfoliating skin, but is a little more gentle than salt or raw sugars.

To the white sugar I add 3 tablespoons of liquid coconut oil – BUT – I always add the oil one tablespoon at a time and stir after each addition so I can keep good control of the final consistency. You might like the consistency after only 2 tablespoons are added. Or maybe you like a wetter mixture and would prefer to add 4 tablespoons. If you go slowly and mix after each addition, it will help you discover the sugar scrub texture that you like best.

Sugar Scrub Makes A Great Homemade Gift Too

I have another reason for choosing the ingredient measurements that I shared above. This makes a perfectly sized batch for a shallow 8 oz wide-mouth canning jar. These squatty jars are always a nice choice for homemade hand and body scrubs as it’s very easy to reach into them and scoop out some of the scrub. I like to use one of my plastic lids for canning jars to finish things off.

To make your gift giving of sugar scrub a little easier, I created some simple round labels that work nicely on the top of these jars. I’ve got four colors, including a holiday green for the Christmas season.

But of course you don’t have to wait for any special occasion to make yourself some of this easy DIY sugar scrub. With the two simple ingredients of sugar + liquid coconut oil, you can easily stir together a batch to keep by your sink for your hands, or to use in the shower for pampering anytime you wish.

Equipment:

  • Small mixing bowl and stirring utensil
  • Small jar with lid for finished sugar scrub (about an 8 oz size)

Materials:

  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons liquid coconut oil (also called fractionated)

Instructions:

  • Place the sugar in a small mixing bowl.
  • Add the coconut oil a tablespoon at a time, stirring after each tablespoon is added to check consistency. (see notes below)
  • Transfer to a small jar with a lid for storage.
  • To use: Take a small amount of scrub and rub it around on your wet hands or other body area, and then rinse away with water.

Notes:

I like this mixture with the 3 tablespoons of oil. However if you like a drier scrub, you may wish to stop after 2 tablespoons are added, or if you like a wetter scrub you might even wish to add a little more than the 3 tablespoons the recipe calls for.

  1. Bev,
I love that the sugar will pass through your drain pipes, not posing a clog hazard as other scrub ingredients sometimes do.
Thanks so much for the labels for gift giving too!
