This summer I’m enjoying a new homemade after-sun spray I created that’s a combination of a couple of my favorite things. For many years aloe vera gel has been a summer favorite for me for it’s soothing and healing help for sunburned skin. And in the winter, my homemade glycerin spray has been one of my favorite moisturizers. Now I finally have a convenient combo of both of those things – a DIY spray with both aloe and glycerin!

How To Make An After-Sun Spray With Aloe

I created this homemade spray so I would have something to help soothe and rehydrate my skin after being out in the sun and water. I decided to use the same strategy I use to make my glycerin spray and started with a base of distilled water into which I could stir my helpful ingredients. (Note: If I’m actually treating a more severe sunburn, I prefer to use just straight, undiluted, aloe vera gel).

Making a homemade after sun spray

I began by measuring 2/3 cup of distilled water into a bowl. I always recommend using distilled water for homemade personal care products as it’s a purified, shelf-stable product.

Then I whisked in 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and 1 tablespoon of glycerin. This will give you a mixture that’s still liquid enough to use in a spray or mist bottle.

I use my homemade after sun moisturizing spray in a glass mist bottle and even though this liquid has a slight bit of thickness to it, it still comes out of the mist bottle just fine. I always prefer mist bottles for homemade moisturizers for the more gentle spray that they provide. I’ve really liked my 8 oz glass mist bottles (although I can’t always find them in stock). You could also use smaller 4 oz glass mist bottles (which are actually a little easier to handle) and divide the mixture between a couple bottles, or you could try 8 oz plastic mist bottles.

When it’s time to use the mixture, simply spray it onto your skin and then rub it around to distribute it and help it soak in. It feels good after having been out in the sun, but of course you can use it any time you want to give your skin some natural moisturizing care.

If you like to use aloe in the summer for your skin, I think you’ll find this spray to be another very helpful way to use it. Undiluted aloe vera gel can be a little sticky so this homemade spray is a great alternative for getting it onto your skin. And you’ll probably notice as I did, that this mixture is wonderful for softening your skin too making it a great option to add to your summer skin care routine.

  1. Hi, I have lots of aloe growing outside. If I’m willing to do the work of peeling it, how could I incorporate it into this recipe? Thanks, can’t wait to try it.

    1. I think once you scrape the aloe gel off the leaf, you could measure it by the tablespoon to use directly in this recipe. However because it is all natural with no preservatives in it, I would just make a half batch of this spray so you can use it up more quickly, and you might need to keep it in the refrigerator too.
