Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk
If at first you don’t succeed – try, try, again. My first attempts at homemade sweetened condensed milk were not very good, but after getting a few tips from others, I’ve finally been able to make a good homemade version.
What did I do differently this time around? I used a blender instead of a hand mixer and used real butter instead of margarine. Both those changes helped!
A reader told me she puts all the ingredients in a blender and then blends it on high for one full minute. She then puts the mixture in the refrigerator overnight and the next day she has thick and creamy sweetened condensed milk. She was right . . . it worked!
Here’s the recipe and how I did it:
Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1 cup non-fat dry milk powder
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1/4 cup butter – melted
Put the dry milk powder and the sugar in a blender. Add the boiling water and the melted butter.
(At this point I stirred things together a little bit before blending) Then blend on high for one minute.
My blender has number settings from 1 to 14 and I briefly dithered over what to use for “High”. I finally settled on 11 which is labeled “Smoothie”.
Transfer the mixture to a clean jar, cover, and refrigerate overnight.
– OR – you can use the method I used which is to put a canning jar on a blender. Put all the ingredients together in a quart size canning jar with a regular size mouth opening (not the wide mouth) and screw it onto your blender. Once the ingredients are blended, you can then simply unscrew the jar with its blended contents, put a lid on it, and pop everything into the refrigerator.
The next day you will need to stir the mixture again, and the final result should be a creamy thickened mixture of homemade sweetened condensed milk that’s about equal in size to a store bought can of sweetened condensed milk.
I tried mine out in a recipe for bars that I’ve been making for years and it worked perfectly!

Once you make the condensed milk or evaporated milk, how long can it stay in the fridge?
I have always used mine up in a recipe, right when I make it so I am not sure how long it will last in the refrigerator. I would think it would be OK for a week or so.
Just made coconut condensed milk using coconut cream concentrate as the butter fat.making ice cream
Can honey be used in place of the sugar?
Doesn’t your recipe make just a dab too much? Not that it would ever be a problem here, I love it in coffee!
I use one cup powdered milk, 2/3 cup sugar, 1/3 cup boiling water and 3 TBSP butter. A minute in the Magic Bullet and Bingo! It’s ready to go. Equals one can of purchased sweetened condensed milk.
