Make Your Own Tartar Sauce
Why is it I never have tartar sauce in the house when I need it? Lucky for me I learned this easy substitute that has come to the rescue on many occasions. Now I can make my own tartar sauce on the spur of the moment! In fact, I’m beginning to think I really don’t need to buy the store bought tartar sauce at all anymore.
I sometimes think of this as my “shortcut” tartar sauce because even though you can add some extra flavor ingredients if you want, I usually use just two ingredients: mayonnaise and pickle relish. And many times I don’t measure either. Just a few good size spoonfuls of mayo with a couple smaller size spoonfuls of pickle relish and that’s it!
A good starting point if you do want to measure is to use a 1/2 cup of mayonnaise with a 1/4 cup of pickle relish and that’s what you see in the photos here. Once that’s measured out, simply stir them together.
You can also jazz up this basic combination by adding a little salt and pepper, a dash of worcestershire sauce, or a bit of lemon juice to the mix. But I often find that I’m content with the basic mayonnaise and pickle relish combo and that’s become our go-to way to make a homemade tartar sauce.
Another thing I like about this simple DIY tartar sauce is that it’s easy to make in any size that’s needed, and usually that means I’m just making a small little bowl for a meal for two. We don’t use tartar sauce that often so it’s a nice way to make some when needed and I don’t have to wonder if I have a store-bought bottle around. It’s a handy little shortcut that I think you’ll find helpful and tasty too!

Thank you for this recipe. I did not know how simple it was. Every where else had like 4 or 5 ingredients that used lemon juice and when I read your article I was surprised at the simplicity of tartar sauce. Thank you for a recipe that even a child can do.
Yup, I always think that simple is the best!
I don't think I have ever purchased tartar sauce at the grocery store! The lemon juice is a good idea!
