What do you do when you have some leftover steak to use up?

You make Fajitas!

And do you buy a Fajita Seasoning Mix Packet ?

Heck no – you make your own!

Homemade Fajita Seasoning Sjpice Blend

This easy homemade fajita seasoning recipe uses many of the same spices as my homemade seasoning for taco meat, which is great because they’re spices I almost always have on hand in my cupboard.  You can either mix up a batch ahead of time, or you can simply add the separate spices to the meat and vegetables while they’re sizzling in the skillet.

I made a kind of smallish batch of fajita filling because I was using up leftovers.  I had about 6 ounces of cooked steak, a small green pepper, and a small onion.  I only needed about one tablespoon of this spice blend mixture to season a batch of filling that size that fed two people.

If you’re making a larger batch to feed more people, you’ll probably want to add the entire batch.  However it’s best to add the spice slowly because once it’s in, you can’t take it out.

Fajita Seasoning Spice Blend

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper (cayenne)
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Combine all ingredients to create a fajita spice blend.

To Use:

Coat a skillet with a tablespoon or two of olive oil.

If using raw meat, add it to the skillet first and cook through.  If you’re using leftover meat that has already been cooked, it can be added to the skillet at the same time as the vegetables. (Chopped green pepper and onion is a traditional choice for fajitas).

Saute the meat and vegetables for about 10 minutes until everything is cooked through and the vegetables are softened.

Add the amount of fajita seasoning to your liking for the amount of meat and vegetables you are using, and add about 1/4 cup of water, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

Serve by placing a spoonful or two of the mixture on a soft taco shell or a tortilla and folding over to wrap.
