Make Your Own Montreal Steak Seasoning

Homemade spice blends are a quick and simple way to add a boost of flavor when cooking a meal. Of course there’s lots of ready made spice blends and rubs to choose from at the stores, but it’s really just as quick and easy to stir them together yourself with spices you may already have on hand in your pantry. A blend that’s been a favorite at our house for several years is our homemade Montreal steak seasoning. It’s so easy and tasty too!

Ingredients for Homemade Montreal Seasoning

I can’t really say for sure if my homemade Montreal seasoning blend uses exactly the same ingredients as the store bought blends. But I do know that’s it’s tasty and over the years it’s become a dependable seasoning in our house that we reach for all the time.

Jars of spices used to make homemade Montreal seasoning

To make this blend I use seven familiar pantry spices:

  • salt
  • black pepper
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • ground thyme
  • ground cayenne pepper
  • crushed rosemary

The base of this blend is just good old salt and pepper, with some other savory flavors added to the mix too. Another thing to like about this recipe is that only one measuring utensil is needed. Simply get out your teaspoon and go to work!

Spices measured out to make homemade Montreal seasoning

Once all your ingredients are measured out, simply stir them together. That’s all it takes to make your own Montreal spice mix!

This Montreal steak seasoning recipe will make about 17 teaspoons of spice blend which fits perfectly into a recycled spice jar. I like to use a spice jar with a shaker top with larger holes (because of the rosemary in this mix). Then it’s ready to go for sprinkling on your meat.

And guess what? As time has gone along, we found ourselves using this blend more often on chicken than we do steak. We actually love it on our chicken! So have fun finding different ways to use this blend. Its salt and pepper base makes it a very versatile and frugal DIY spice blend.
