This week Dawson came to visit. Who is Dawson? He is my sweet friendly grand-dog and his visit was the perfect excuse to try out a recipe for some homemade dog treats. I mixed up a batch of dough, cut it into cute little bone shapes, and then presented them to Dawson for his taste testing and approval.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

Did Dawson like his homemade dog biscuits? Oh yeah, he gobbled them up. Is there anything Dawson would not gobble up? Hmmmmm not sure.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

This dough mixed together well, rolled out well, and I had everything on hand needed to make them at the spur of the moment. The dry ingredients needed are oats, cornmeal, whole wheat flour, and sugar. These are mixed with beef bouillon, butter, milk, peanut butter, and an egg.

Once you have the dough mixed together they can be cut out using a cookie cutter and baked. If you use bone-shaped cookie cutters they make very cute homemade dog treats! Of course any shape will do and the dogs won’t be fussy. They’ll gobble up their homemade dog biscuits no matter what shape they are.

Materials:

  • 1 cup very hot water
  • 3 cubes beef bouillon
  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the boiling water with the beef bouillon cubes and let the cubes dissolve.
  • Add the cup of oats and the butter to the beef bouillon water and let it set for a few minute for the butter to melt and the oats to soften.
  • Add in the milk, peanut butter, egg, cornmeal and sugar and mix well.
  • Next mix in the whole wheat flour, one cup at a time. For the addition of the last cup of flour, I switched to using my hands to mix it in and to knead the mixture into a soft dough.
  • Roll out to about a 1/4" thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out the dough.  Lay on ungreased cookie sheets. You can lay them pretty close together as they do not spread out while baking.
  • Bake for 30 to 35minutes. Remove from oven and let cool.
