Wine Bottle Santas with Knit Hats
A bottle of wine (or sparkling grape juice) can be simple solution for a hostess gift or co-worker gift during the busy holiday season. And to make that simple gift just a bit more festive, here’s a fun idea to dress up a wine bottle. You can use this free printable knitting pattern for little hats for wine bottles, and then add a festive scrapbook paper Santa suit too!

This is a super quick little knitting pattern I came up with that can be a great way to use up those odds and ends of yarn you might have in your stash. Just giving your bottles a little hat can be enough, but if you want to do just a bit more, I’ve got an additional idea for using scrapbook paper, a bit of ribbon, and some pom poms that can look like Christmas Santa suits.
And the next thing you know, a whole little group of wine bottles with knit Christmas hats and little red suits will have gathered together!

Knitting Pattern for Hats for Wine Bottles
To make these knit hats for your wine bottles, I use US size 4 knitting needles with the medium weight (size 4) yarn. This gives the hats a tighter, sturdy texture. I used a little bit of dark red yarn, and contrasting white yarn. There’s a printable pattern below, but here’s a quick overview of how it’s done.
Cast on 20 stitches in white, and then knit 3 rows.
Break off the white yarn and attach the red.
Knit 1 row
Purl 1 row
Begin Decreases:
Row 1: K2 tog, knit across to last 2 stitches, K2 tog
Row 2: Purl
Repeat these two rows until 6 stitches remain on needle
Final row: K2 tog, K2, K2 tog (4 sts)
To finish, cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread the tail of yarn through a tapestry needle and then pull through the stitches to remove them from the needle. Use the tail of yarn to sew the seam down the back of the hat. Weave in any remaining yarn ends. Sew a pom-pom onto the top of the hat.
How To Make Santa Suits for Wine Bottles
To add a Santa suit to go with your wine bottle hats, all you really need to do is wrap some paper around your bottles. Yes, it’s just about that easy!
Cut a 4¼” x 10″ piece of red scrapbook paper and wrap it around the bottle, overlapping the edges in the back and securing with double sided tape. Then cut a 1″ x 10″ piece of white scrapbook paper and secure around the bottle in the same way, positioning the white strip at the bottom of the red strip, overlapping slightly.
To create a “belt”, cut a 10″ piece of black ribbon and wrap it around the bottle, securing it in the back with double stick tape or glue. You can also cut a small “belt buckle” from white scrapbook paper and glue to the front – or – you might be able to find some kind of scrapbooking embellishment (like I did) that resembles a belt buckle. Glue four very small white pom poms to the front for buttons and your Santa suit is complete!
For the final gift-giving touches, I like to add some curling ribbon around the neck of the bottle along with a gift tag. All these little touches don’t take much time or effort, but the final result shows you cared enough to make an ordinary food gift just a little bit more special.

I have a quick question that I hope I can get help with.
How many rows do you knit once you start the knit 1 row purl 1 row before you start to narrow towards the top of the hat?
You just do those two rows (knit a row, then purl a row), and then you begin the decrease rows. So after you do the white cuff, only two rows are worked even in the red before the decrease rows begin.
cute thank you
Will get lots of pleasure from knitting and giving the Christmas hats and wrap around
Glad you are enjoying the pattern Lily! It is indeed fun to make a group of these wine bottle santas. 🙂
