Simple Semi-Homemade Hand Cream

If you’re looking for a simple yet thoughtful little gift to give to someone special, why not mix up some of this semi-homemade hand cream? It stirs together quickly and can be made from ingredients that are easy to locate. And – it’s not fattening like a box of chocolates. Woot!

This recipe is adapted from a recipe I found here on a blog called Patchwork Times. The basic recipe is to make a blend of baby lotion, Vaseline, and Vitamin E cream. After reading through the 100 or so comments left on that post, I decided to make the following adjustments.

I used the creamy lotion made by the Vaseline brand instead of traditional vaseline as some folks commented the traditional vaseline could make the mixture a little greasy. I used the Shea & Cocoa Butter fragrance of the baby lotion (quite lovely) but the original or any other fragrance is totally good too. The Vitamin E cream that I purchased came in a two pack and I opted to use just one of the containers.

It resulted in a very luxurious and creamy mixture – AND if felt wonderful on my skin too! It works great not only on hands, but anywhere else that needs moisturizing.

Here’s how to do it:

Semi-Homemade Hand Cream Recipe

You Will Need:
1 – 15 Oz Bottle of Baby Lotion
1 – 4.5 oz Tube of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly Cream
1 – 4.5 oz Jar of Vitamin E Skin Care Cream

Empty all three of the ingredients into a mixing bowl. After you empty your bottle of baby lotion, you may want to stand it upside down for another couple of minutes, and then empty it again. This allows you to get as much lotion out of the bottle as possible.

Stir the three lotion/cream ingredients together. There’s no need for an electric mixer. It stirs together well with just a spoon or a spatula.

Next you will need to transfer your mixture to the container(s) of your choice. Pint size canning jars or small ziploc containers are some possibilities. I saved the empty container from the Vitamin E cream and filled it with some of the new mixture and used it as a quick birthday gift.

To make the recycled Vitamin E jar look a little nicer, I removed the original label and covered it with a band of scrapbooking paper. I cut the paper to 1-3/4″ by 9-1/2″, wrapped it around the container, and then secured it with double sided tape. I finished up with a label made on the computer for the top of the jar.

I still had a good amount of cream left and I’m keeping my eye out for some more cute container ideas. {{ Dollar Store maybe ?? }}

And speaking of the dollar store . . . even though I bought all my ingredients at the local Walmart, you could probably find versions of all three of these lotion ingredients at the dollar store too if you’re looking to save a few more bucks.

    1. You could add essential oils but research if the type/scent you want to use is Ok for use on skin. (I believe lavendar is a good choice that is safe on skin).

    1. I used Picmonkey which is a free online photo editing software, to make the label on the top of the jar. I first made just a plain white square in Paint, and then uploaded that to Picmonkey. Once in Picmonkey, in the overlays menu, choose the “label” option and there are various shapes to choose from. Then you can add text too. Picmonkey is pretty awesome for free online software.
