Drinks To Make With Homemade Kahlua
Homemade liqueurs can be a fun little indulgence to make and they can make nice gifts during the holiday season too. An easy idea to try is to make your own Kahlua coffee liqueur. But after you’ve made your homemade Kahlua, it can be handy to have a few ideas for using it as well. So to keep you inspired I’m sharing three ideas for Kahlua cocktails and a bonus idea for a dessert drink. I’ve also got a printable label for your bottle of homemade Kahlua with the cocktail recipes included so any gift recipient can have a few ideas too.
How to Make A Sombrero Cocktail
The Kahlua drink called a Sombrero might be what some of you have always done and didn’t know it had a name! It’s simply a bit of Kahlua in a glass mixed with milk or cream. This is probably my favorite way to drink Kahlua because not only is it easy, but a coffee liqueur is at its best mixed with something like milk or cream. I always just use milk but cream or half and half can be used for a richer flavor.
How to do it: Put a splash of Kahlua in a glass. Top it off with milk or cream to taste. Can be served either with or without ice.
How To Make A Colorado Bulldog Cocktail
The Colorado Bulldog is another tasty Kahlua cocktail known for its final topping off with cola. It gives the drink a little extra flavor and fizz.
How to do it: Put ice in a tall glass. Add 2 parts Kahlua and 2 parts Vodka. Fill the glass with the milk or cream until a couple inches from the top. Finish off the drink by topping it off with cola to fill the glass. Stir to mix.
On a side note, I debated whether to use the term “shots” or “parts” for these recipe. But my son who works at an Italian restaurant clues me in that restaurant bartenders do not use shot glasses and instead use “pours”. Therefore I’ve used what I’m told is really the correct terminology of “parts”, not “shots”. And I’m all about using parts anyway! see my post on How to Adjust Any Recipe Using Parts).
How To Make A White Russian Cocktail
The third Kahlua cocktail recipe is for one of the most classic Kahlua cocktails, the White Russia. It’s very similar to the Colorado Bulldog, minus the cola.
How to do it: Put ice in a short glass. Add 2 parts Kahlua and 1 part Vodka. Top it off with milk or cream and stir to mix.

Bonus Recipe – Mudslide Dessert Drink
And finally, here’s one more delicious way to use your homemade Kahlua and you can use homemade Baileys Irish Cream in this drink too. The base of this drink is vanilla ice cream and is more in the category of a dessert drink than a cocktail. The chocolate syrup that’s drizzled in the glass is how this drink came to get it’s name of a “mudslide”.
How to do it: Combine 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 1/4 cup of Baileys Irish Cream, 1/8 cup of Kahlua, and a 1/4 cup of milk in a blender. Drizzle chocolate syrup in a glass and then fill the glass with the blended mixture.

Sombrero Cocktail
- Kahlua
- milk or cream
Colorado Bulldog Cocktail
- 2 parts Kahlua
- 2 parts Vodka
- milk
- cola
White Russian Cocktail
- 2 parts Kahlua
- 1 part Vodka
- milk or cream
Mudslide Dessert Drink
- 3 scoops vanilla ice cream
- 1/4 cup Baileys Irish Cream (2 ounces)
- 1/4 cup milk (2 ounces)
- 1/8 cup Kahlua (1 ounce)
- chocolate syrup
Instructions:
- To make the Sombrero: Put a splash of Kahlua in a glass. Top it off with milk or cream to taste. Can be served with or without ice.
- To make the Colorado Bulldog:Put ice in a tall glass. Add 2 parts Kahlua and 2 parts Vodka. Fill the glass with the milk or cream until a couple inches from the top. Finish off the drink by topping it off with cola to fill the glass. Stir to mix.
- To make the White Russian:Put ice in a short glass. Add the Kahlua and Vodka. Top it off with milk or cream and stir to mix.
- To make the Mudlisde:Combine the vanilla ice cream, the Baileys, the milk, and the Kahlua in a blender. Drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup around the inside of a glass and then fill the glass with the ice cream mixture.
