Make Your Own Salsa Using Canned Tomatoes
We go through salsa pretty fast at my house. Chips and salsa is one of my hubby’s preferred snacks which started me thinking it might be nice to have a cheap and simple way to make my own salsa. And that’s how I came up with this handy way to use canned tomatoes to make salsa, which got the thumbs up from my family too!

This salsa uses two types of canned tomatoes – a can of regular diced tomatoes and a can of diced tomatoes with green chilies. I use the 14.5 oz size can of the tomatoes with chilies if I can find it, but the 10 oz size cans work OK too.
After combining the cans of tomatoes, I add in a 1/4 cup of diced onion, a teaspoon of dried cilantro, and a 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes. This mixture can be pulsed in a food processor a bit too if you want a smoother salsa.
Then I let the mixture rest in the refrigerator for an hour or two to let the flavors mingle, and then this shortcut homemade salsa is ready to go. It’s a quick way to make a batch of salsa without chopping a lot of tomatoes and it can save a little bit of money too!
Shortcut Salsa made with Canned Tomatoes
Ingredients:
- 1 can diced tomatoes (14 oz size)
- 1 can diced tomatoes with green chilies (14 oz size)
- ¼ cup diced onion
- 1 teaspoon dried cilantro
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
Instructions:
- Combine all the ingredients.Note – you may wish to drain some of the liquid form the cans of tomatoes if you prefer a chunkier salsa.
- For best flavor, let the mixture rest for an hour or two in the refrigerator to let the flavors mingle.
Notes:

Peppers freeze very well. I use fresh jalapenos for my salsa and chop all of them then store the extras in the freezer. I just toss them in frozen next time. They are small and thaw in no time. Even the frozen ones make salsa taste very fresh, even when made from canned tomatoes. I grow them in the garden. Just a plant or two is enough to keep us in salsa all year, and they grow well in pots, too. I often add a small can of tomato juice, too. I found it makes it so much better without making it watery.
