Pea Guacamole Recipe

It’s not unusual for family or friends to ask me, “What’s coming up next on the blog?” This week when I was asked and I answered “Pea Guacamole”, well, those folks looked back at me like I had finally gone ’round the bend. Why don’t you just use some avocados like everyone else? Well the answer was I wanted something a little different made with plants with a little less fat content than avocados. This pea guacamole turned out quite delicious and received excellent feedback from the friends who snacked on it with us.
I discovered pea guacamole in the Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease book and decided to test it out. This recipe is my adaptation of the recipe which I tweaked to include a couple ingredients from the traditional guacamole recipe I had already been using.
This homemade dip can be a money saver too. Frozen peas are usually cheaper to buy than avocados and might also be something you usually have around the house. I would, however, recommend that you use fresh cilantro (not dried) in this recipe. It was the key ingredient that gave this mixture it’s fresh and yummy flavor. That being said, I did use minced garlic in a jar because I had no fresh garlic cloves around, and felt the recipe still came out fine. Some might disagree with me on that point as I know people can be very particular about using fresh garlic (which is why I left the jar of minced garlic out of the picture below).

The frozen peas are thawed slightly, and then the cilantro, lime juice, and garlic are added to the peas in a food processor and mixed together, scraping the mixture down a couple times if needed.

Then you’ll transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the chopped onion and chopped tomato. Finally some salt and the red pepper flakes are sprinkled in to season to your liking. It helps to let the mixture set for 10 or 15 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld together.
Serve with the munchies of your choice and have fun telling your guests it’s delicious guacamole – made with peas!

The food chain nando’s does a crushed pea with chilli creation that’s lush, it’s not a million miles away from this recipe, I must have a go. Lucky for me my wife hates peas!
