Homemade body scrubs are a great way to give yourself a spa experience without the spa price tag. They’re a simple mixture of an abrasive (such as sugar or salt), mixed with an oil and a fragrance, usually an essential oil. But this recipe gets its fragrance another way. With fresh orange and lemon zest!

If you’re not familiar with the term “Zest”, it’s simply the fine scrapings off the skin of a citrus fruit such as a lemon, lime, or an orange. You can use a zester which is a long, thin grater made specifically for that purpose, or you can just use the fine side of a cheese grater. And while this recipe calls for lemon and orange zest, I’m sure you could be creative and try different combinations using lime zest or grapefruit zest too.

For this scrub recipe you’ll combine a 1/2 cup of sea salt with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of oil. Then you’ll add in a 1/2 teaspoon each of orange zest and lemon zest which will give lovely color and fragrance to your scrub. This scrub makes a nice hand scrub, and it makes a nice gift too!
