Well, I never thought I would write the words “Make your own Poo Spray” but here I am doing it! Perhaps you too have seen this interesting product that a lot of people have dubbed Poo Spray and have wondered how you can make your own version. Or perhaps you’re thinking, “What the heck is a Poo Spray? Explain yourself please!”

What most do-it-yourselfers are dubbing Poo Spray is a copycat version of a toilet spray product called Poo-Pourri. For me, Poo-Pourri has the distinction of having the only You Tube commercial that I have completely watched all the way to the end. You know how you’re usually watching that little thing in the corner counting down: You Can Skip This Ad in 3 . . 2. . 1 and you’re just waiting to hit “Skip This Ad!” BUT, I sat all the way through their commercial chuckling and giggling. It was one of the most silly, kind of stupid, but hard-to-quit-watching type of commercials I have ever seen. The Skip This Ad button was totally forgotten! That’s how I first learned about Poo-Pourri. 🙂

Another product that has recently come on the scene is Airwick’s V.I.Poo Pre-Poo Toilet Spray. And just like the Poo-Pourri brand, you can easily pay between $7 and $9 for a small 2 oz bottle of the stuff – another reason the DIY crowd is looking for ways to make their own.

So that being said, these “poo sprays” are sprays meant to mask those totally natural, but somewhat bothersome toilet odors resulting from taking care of your #2 business. But rather than a spray that you spray around in the air after the job is done, this spray is designed to be sprayed onto the toilet water, creating a barrier on the surface of the water and trapping any odors underneath. The sprays use scented oils in the mixture to help create this barrier on the water.

This product is sold in small bottles so you can easily take it along with you and if nature calls in a place where you must use a public restroom or other type of shared or “nearby” bathroom environment (hotel, cottage, friend’s house, etc.) you can do so with less risk of everybody knowing exactly what you did in there. Just pump a few sprays onto the toilet water and nobody is the wiser to any of those less-than-pleasant smells that are about to happen. Their slogan is “Spray Before You Go and No One Will Know”.

How To Make Your Own Toilet Pre-Poo Spray

So how can you make your own pre-poo toilet spray? With essential oils . . . and if you’re a DIY kind of person, chances are you’ve already got some essential oils around the house. These essential oils are just the thing to make your own homemade Poo Pourri, which will create a barrier on the toilet water surface just like the store bought version.

Of course if we make our spray by just adding some essential oils to water, our mixture will separate. Oil and water, as we know, do not mix. (Which is why Poo Spray works in the first place!). There are quite a few recipes out there that take the strategy of adding a little rubbing alcohol to the mix as a carrier ingredient to help the oil and water mix together. I tried this but was not really happy with my results. And that’s when I decided to just use all alcohol. Not rubbing alcohol (which would just be adding another strong smell), but vodka!

Yes, vodka made an excellent base as it stayed mixed with the essential oils but does not have any strong smell of its own to mess up the mixture. I was quite happy with how my little mixture turned out. And yes, I tested it but will elaborate no further on that subject except to say I think it did was it was supposed to do.

To make my homemade Poo Spray, I use a 2 oz blue glass bottle and fill it with 1/4 cup vodka. Any old cheap vodka will work in this recipe. Another option is to use Witch Hazel instead of vodka.

Next I add in 20 drops of essential oil. I like a combination of 10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil and 10 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil. I found this to be about the right amount of essential oils but of course it can be increased or decreased to your liking.

To use your homemade Poo Spray, just spray it on the toilet water surface (about 4 or 5 sprays should do it) before taking care of business.

I found this size batch to be just right for this mixture. A small 2 oz bottle is discreet enough to set out on a toilet, or to carry in your purse. If you’ve ever been intrigued by these type of sprays too, this simple DIY version is certainly an easy way to give it a try.
