Quick and Easy Way to Make Garlic Salt

|

A frugal hack that I’ve used for many years is this quick recipe to make your own garlic salt. It’s a super simple two ingredient combo anyone can whip up that lets you make garlic salt with garlic powder and salt that you probably already have in your pantry. Once you learn this trick you might never buy the premade garlic salts again!

My Garlic Salt Recipe Ratio

My homemade garlic salt recipe uses a 2:1 ratio of salt and garlic, meaning it uses 2 parts salt to each one part of garlic powder. Many other recipes online use a higher ratio of salt (and the store bought garlic salts probably have a higher ratio of salt too). But I’ve always used and prefer this mixture that keeps the salt a bit lower and tweaks the garlic flavor just a bit higher and it’s always worked just fine in my recipes.

Homemade garlic salt ingredients

To make this homemade garlic salt recipe I mix ¼ cup ordinary table salt with 2 Tablespoons garlic powder. And that’s all there is to it!

These amounts will create a batch size of about 19 teaspoons (or about a 3.5 oz weight) so it usually fits perfectly into recycled spice jar. If you keep a recycled garlic salt spice bottle, you won’t even have to re-label it. 🙂

Try Garlic Salt with Parsley, or Onion Salt too!

Now that you know how to make garlic salt using garlic powder, you can branch out from there and make these variations too.

One idea is to add some dried parsley which is an ingredient often included in the store bought garlic salts. Start by adding a teaspoon of dried parsley with the salt and garlic powder and you can always add more if you wish.

Another idea is to use this same strategy to make onion salt. You can use the same recipe ratio but just mix the salt with onion powder instead.

There are always ways to customize your mixtures when you make your own!
