Decorate Your Easter Eggs With Crayons

How to color Easter eggs with crayons - A fun way to decorate eggs with ordinary coloring crayons!

Looking for an easy and resourceful way to decorate your Easter eggs?  And maybe something that the kids can help with too?

Look no further than the crayon box! All those colorful crayons can be a convenient and fun way to make your own pretty Easter eggs.

There’s really not much more to this method than hard boiling some eggs and then coloring on them while the eggs are still warm.  The warmth of the eggs will soften the wax of the crayon so you can swirl it around a bit and decorate the egg.

If you are working with little ones (I did this project with my 2½ year old grandson), you will probably want to set the warm eggs back in the egg carton for decorating so that they don’t have to try to hold the hot egg while they color on it. We also found it worked well to kind of smudge the first layer of crayon around (because it was sort of happening by itself anyway), and then color on top of that with other colors.

And of course when you’re working with little ones, you must let go of perfection and let them enjoy the creative process.  My grandson immediately picked up a white crayon and announced “I will use this white one!”  Well, ummm, white doesn’t show up so good on those eggs, dear.  How about we pick another color?

Nope, he persisted with the white crayon and decided it was an eraser.  “You color Grandma, and I will erase now!” Well, ummmm, OK. So I would color on an egg, and he would then swirl around his white crayon on top of it.  And guess what? We got some nice muted color tones on our eggs.  Who would have thought?

So please enjoy the creative process as you color your eggs.  Leave your expectations behind.

Pick up your white crayon and have fun. 🙂

How To Decorate Easter Eggs With Crayons

You Will Need:

  • Eggs
  • Crayons

1. Begin by hard boiling your eggs.  I use the method of putting my eggs in a saucepan and covering them with cold water.  Then I bring the eggs and the water to a boil on the stove top.  Once they are boiling, I remove them from the heat, put the lid on the pan, and let them sit in the hot water for about 10 minutes.

2. After the 10 minutes your eggs should be hard boiled and you can remove them from the pan (with tongs or a slotted spoon).  We then set the boiled eggs in the egg carton again so we could color on them while they were still warm without having to hold them.  You need to color on the eggs while they are still warm so the crayon wax melts a bit and you can smear it around on the egg.

3. To decorate the eggs, simply color on them with a crayon while the eggs are still warm.  We used old pieces of crayon and in fact my grandson was liking all the old pieces that no longer had their wrapper, maybe because those pieces were very obviously a certain color.  We sorted all those unwrapped crayon pieces out into a bowl and used them for our coloring.

4. You may want to smudge the first layer of coloring around on the egg to give it a background color.  You can then color on top of that with another crayon, making swirly designs.

Or you can pick up a white crayon and erase.  Whatever.  It’s all good.

As the eggs begin cooling a bit, you can pick them up and hold them a little better to finish your coloring and designs.

5. When you are done coloring on the eggs, put them in the refrigerator to set the color.
