Emojis for the DIY Crowd

Making your own stuff can be a roller coaster of emotions.

When a recipe or experiment turns out great and saves us a bunch of money, we feel wonderful. We did it!  That was easy!  Woohoo!

Then we forge ahead with something else, and it bombs.  What the heck?!  It should have worked! Boo. Grrrrr. Grumble, Grumble.

Sound familiar?  Probably.

So as I was fiddling around on the computer a few weeks ago, I made myself this little graphic and I bet some of you can relate.  There are certainly feelings and highs and lows involved if you decide to Make Your Own!

Emojis for the DIY Crowd

Yes, I love it when I can figure out a recipe on my own, when I can use my resources, and when I can save money.  And I feel discouraged and sad sometimes when I have failures and when I waste money on experiments that don’t turn out.  And sometimes I laugh at myself too. Hmmm, what was I thinking? Oh well, try, try again.

So as we begin a new year, I would encourage you to always enjoy the process.  Take the good with the bad and try to learn from it all. Finding joy in the journey helps us through the bumps we are sure to experience on the way.

And as you continue the journey and keep learning, you might find things get a little smoother too. You’ll start to see patterns and find your preferences.  For instance now that I’ve been making my own cleaners for several years, I’ve got it narrowed down to my favorite five DIY cleaners I make all the time.  Sure, I’m still curious.  Sure, I still test others recipes out.  But if it’s crunch time, I’ve done enough learning already that I’ve got my trusty stand-by recipes ready to go.  Keep forging ahead and you’re sure to find yourself in that place too.

And remember your motivation.  I’m usually most motivated by saving money and using my resources wisely.  If I stick to recipes and experiments that align with those motivations, I usually feel the best about what I’m doing.  Maybe your motivation is to have homemade options because of allergies, or you want to care more for the environment.  Whatever it may be, remind yourself of your motivation to help you decide which homemade things to pursue or not to pursue, especially in those seasons of discouragement.

I’m looking forward to another year of sharing homemade ideas with all of you and providing inspiration, motivation, and encouragement along the way.  Even if we have ups and downs, we’ll keep learning and making our own!
