Quick DIY Dry Erase Boards

I had a choir teacher in high school who was fond of saying “The dullest pencil is sharper than the sharpest mind.”

In other words, “Write this down dum dums because you just can’t trust your mind to remember things!”

I’ve always remembered that piece of advice and it’s so true.  Writing something down makes it more lasting and visible, and frees our mind up to focus on other more important things.

So today’s project is a quick little hack to make your own dry erase board if you need a place to quick write something down so you don’t forget or to leave notes for family members.  And because it’s a dry erase board that you can wipe clean, you can keep updating it with the current info as needed.

All you need is a picture frame, some paper for the background, and some dry erase markers.  Even better, you can probably find all these things on the cheap at your local dollar store.  I used some leftover scrapbook paper I had around the house, but you could also just use plain white copy paper if that’s what you have.  I also thought the clear acrylic stand-up type of frame I bought at the dollar store worked nicely for this purpose too (sometimes these are called sign holders).

One you have your DIY dry erase board assembled, you can just write on the glass of the frame with your dry erase markers, or you can write directly on the clear acrylic type of frame.   When it comes time to write something else, just take a tissue and wipe it clean.  Easy!

Here’s how to do it:

DIY Dry Erase Boards

You Will Need:

  • Picture frame with glass – or –
  • Clear Acrylic Frame (sometimes called a Sign Holder)
  • Paper of at least the same size as your frame
  • Dry Erase Markers

Cut your paper to a size that will fit in your frame.  I trace around the paper that comes with the frame. A colorful paper is nice to perk things up, but if the paper is too busy of a print it may be hard to see what you’ve written.

That’s it!

Set your new dry erase board wherever you need it handy for writing notes and messages.

  1. I did this for a while on one of my white ironstone plates. But I just wanted to share that I had a 6th grade teacher whom I visited several years after graduating and she knew my name when I came to the door unannounced. I asked her secret to a great memory and her reply was “never start writing stuff down to help your memory. Rely strictly on your memory.” Different strokes for different folks.

    1. Oh man, I can’t imagine only relying on my memory without writing things down. You’re right . . . different strokes for different folks I guess!
