If you’re a regular reader of this blog and you stopped by and visited last week, you may have noticed that things looked just a little bit different. You may have spotted the new logo, the new colors, and a couple of the new helpful pages that have been added.
Yes, there’s a new look!
So today I’m sharing a few highlights of some of the changes that have been made which I hope continue to give you a positive experience here at The Make Your Own Zone.
Let’s take a look . . .
1. Mobile Friendly
This new layout is what’s known in blogger lingo as “responsive” meaning it will respond appropriately to whatever type of device you are viewing it on. So if you’ve been frustrated trying to read my blog on your phone or tablet, this new layout should help!
2. A Complete Recipe Index
Setting up a recipe index page for this blog has been on my To-Do List for awhile now, and I’m happy to say I finally sat myself down and got it done! As the list of recipes has continued to grow on this blog, I wanted to make it easier for visitors and readers to get a good overview of the all the recipes that are available by gathering them all together in one spot.
Here’s the link to that page: Recipe Index
You can access this page anytime by clicking the link at the top of my blog – or – there’s a link on the side of my blog to this page too.
3. The Quick Tour Page
Another page that’s been added is a Quick Tour Page that introduces you to some of the features of this site if you’re a new visitor. BUT, even if you’re not a new visitor, this page may give you a few reminders of the things you can find and use on this blog.
Here’s the link to that page: New? Start Here
This page is available anytime by clicking on the link at the top of my blog, and once again, there’s a link on the side of the blog too.
4. A New Search Function
I was previously using a search function for this blog that was powered by Google, BUT Google would always show a bunch of their ads first and then the search results for my blog would follow along down below and you had to scroll down to see them. Some readers told me this was confusing. So I’m trying a different search function now and we’ll see how it works. If you can’t find a recipe on the Recipe Index page, you can try the search box at the top of my blog where it says “Looking For Something?” and that should help you find what you’re looking for too.
5. Featured Books
This isn’t really a new feature as I’ve been putting links on the side of my blog to books I think my readers will find interesting for several months now. However what I have changed is to start a list of these books which can be found under the “Resources” on the top menu bar, and then clicking “Favorite Books“. So far the list only shows one book, because it’s a new page 🙂 But I’ll keep adding books each month as I find them and my hope is to create a helpful recommended reading list for those who like DIY and homemade solutions.
And in the interest of full disclosure, these are Amazon affiliate links and I make a small commission should someone chose to buy one of the books. However I only link to things that are interesting to me too and that I think my readers will find helpful. My full Amazon affiliate legal blurb is always visible at the bottom of my blog.
6. Printing Recipes
This one is just a reminder that you can print any part of a post or recipe from this blog using the little green “Print Friendly” button that appears at the bottom of each post.
When you click on the Print Friendly button, you will get a pop-up screen that let’s you first delete any part of the page that you don’t want to print. I hope this saves you some paper and let’s you print just the stuff you want to print.
So those are a few of the features that I hope will make visiting this blog a positive experience. I want to take a moment to say a big Thank You to all of my loyal readers who have been following along, and have taught me a lot over the last few years with your helpful insights, comments, and suggestions. You guys are a smart crowd!
I also want to say Thank You to Laura at Pixel Me Designs who created this new design and was always prompt, courteous, and pleasant to work with. If you’re a blogger looking for some design help, check her out!
As always, my goal here continues to be providing creative and resourceful ideas for homemade alternatives. This little excerpt from my Recipe Index page is a good summary:
Although my focus is not necessarily being green . . . you’ll find many recipes are natural;
Although my focus is not necessarily being frugal . . . you’ll find many recipes are thrifty;
Although my focus is not necessarily being crafty . . . you’ll find many recipes are creative.
