Homemade Gifts: Spicy Pecans

I love to have quick ideas for homemade food gifts during the holidays.  That’s why I’m keeping this recipe for spicy nuts handy because it can be put together in just 20 minutes, plus it’s a nice change of pace from the sweets.

This recipe that I clipped out of a magazine last year calls for pecan halves, but I think you could also make it with walnuts, mixed nuts, or peanuts.  I adapted the original recipe to work with a couple of the 6 oz bags of pecan halves from Aldi.  Whatever type of nuts you use, you will need about three cups of nuts altogether.

The original recipe also called for sea salt, which I had on hand and used, but substituting regular table salt should work OK too.

And even though these are called “spicy pecans”, I thought they had just the right amount of spiciness.  Just enough to add a little heat, but not too overpowering.

The original recipe was technically called “spicy COCKTAIL pecans”, because apparently we are supposed to be lounging about munching on these as we sip our holiday cocktails.  Oooo, la la !!

Spicy Cocktail Pecans

Adapted from Country Living Magazine

  • 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick) – melted

  • 2 teaspoons Tabasco sauce

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon salt (I used sea salt)

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 12 ounces of pecan halves (about 3 cups)

In a small bowl combine the melted butter with the tabasco, the worcestershire, and the salt and garlic powder.

Place the pecan halves in a larger bowl.  Pour the butter mixture over the pecans, stirring well to coat all the nuts.

Spread pecans evenly in a baking pan.  Bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes.

Remove from oven and spread on paper toweling to cool.

If packaging in bags for gift giving, remember that the nuts could leave greasy marks on paper bags because of the buttery coating. Some options are to just use plastic baggies tied with ribbon, or put the plastic baggies within a paper bag (if you prefer the look of the paper bags).  You can also purchase lined paper bags (like these Kraft Tin Tie Bakery Bags) that are cute for gift giving.
