Make Your Own Potato Chips

It’s been said that a big part of getting a job done is having the right tools.

*So True*

When it came to making my own potato chips this week I had one tool that was perfect, and another tool that was not-so-perfect.  What tools did I use?

A mandoline slicerand a microwave.  Using the mandoline slicer worked great but using the microwave was a little tricky.

A mandoline slicer is a great little gadget that allows you to slice fruits or vegetables very thinly.  If you’re making your own potato chips, this is ideal for cutting very thin little slices of potato instead of trying to do it with a knife with your fingers getting in the way.  It’s the perfect tool for making your own potato chips.

Microwaving your potato slices to turn them into potato chips is a quick and healthy way to cook the potatoes slices, but it’s hard to get the perfect level of drying and crispiness.  Nevertheless, it does work and you can make yourself a nice little batch of chips to satisfy a munchie craving.

Here’s how to do it:

You Will Need:

  • Potatoes

  • Salt

  • Cooking Spray

1.  Wash the potatoes to get rid of any dusty dirt.  You can also peel the potatoes, but it isn’t absolutely necessary.

2.  Slice the potatoes very thinly with a mandoline slicer if you have one available.  Here’s my little mandoline slicer from Aldi’s.

3.  Rinse the potato slices in a bowl of water, and then discard the water.

4.  Lay the potato slices out on a towel.  Lay another towel over them and pat down to dry the potato slices a little bit.

5.  Now you will have to work in small batches. Put a single layer of potato slices on a paper plate or other microwave safe plate.  Spritz the potato slices lightly with cooking spray and sprinkle with salt.

6.  Microwave until the potato slices are dried and crispy.  Mine took about 2-1/2 minutes and I checked them after each minute.

The good part about using the microwave for homemade potato chips is that you don’t need to use any fattening oils.  They’re also done pretty quickly.

The not-so-good part about using the microwave is it’s a little hard to get the timing right.  If the potato slices are still a little soft when you take them out of the microwave, they will stay that way so you need to make sure they get dried out without toasting them too much.  You also have to work in small batches.  Here’s the problem with small batches:

While you are cooking the second batch, you’ll want to sample the first batch just to make sure they turned out OK. The first batch will quickly disappear.  While the third batch is cooking, you will be eating the second batch.  By the time you are on the last batch,  your family will come in the kitchen, look at the mess and ask what you are making.

You will probably have a grand total of 6 potato chips left to show them. 🙂
