Holiday Treats: White Chocolate Munchie Mix

The Christmas season is upon us once again. It’s the time of year for tinsel and lights, parties and packages, peace on earth, goodwill to men, and . . .

Sugar. And Chocolate. Lots of sugar and chocolate please.

Bring on the Christmas treats!

For the next couple of weeks leading up to Christmas we’ll be looking at some recipes for homemade holiday treats. First up – one of my favorite munchie mixes.

This mix goes together quickly which is always a bonus during this busy time of year. I’ve used it as gifts in little ribbon tied bags – OR – I’ve just set big bowls of it out at parties too and let the guests gobble it up.

CandiQuik

The recipe calls for one pound of white chocolate which is melted and poured over the mix. I use a product called CandiQuik which is actually labeled as a “vanilla flavored candy coating” but it works perfectly as white chocolate in this recipe. I buy this at my local Meijer grocery store in a one pound package. Inside the package the chocolate is in a cardboard tray that can go directly into the microwave for melting. Very handy!

If you can’t find white chocolate sold in a block like this type of product, you can also use the white morsel type of baking chips that are sold in 12 oz bags and then use about one and half bags. Another option is to use the Wilton White Candy Melts that are sold in craft stores in their candy making departments or on Amazon.

WHITE CHOCOLATE MUNCHIE MIX

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups Corn or Rice Chex
  • 3 cups Cheerios
  • 2 cups mini twist pretzels
  • 2 cups peanuts
  • 12 oz package of M & M’s
  • 1 Lb White Chocolate

In the largest mixing bowl that you have, combine the Chex, Cheerios, pretzels, peanuts, and M & M’s.

Melt the white chocolate in the microwave. Start with one minute and stir, and then keeping microwaving and stirring in 20 to 30 second intervals until the chocolate is melted and smooth. (Use a glass bowl or other microwave safe bowl if the chocolate is not sold in a cardboard tray that goes directly in the microwave).

Once the chocolate is melted, pour it over the mix a little bit at a time, stirring as you go, until all the melted chocolate is stirred into the mix and is coating all the munchie ingredients.

Finally, spread the mix out onto wax paper to cool. Break any chunks into smaller pieces as needed.

*Note – for a little extra holiday spirit, use a bag of the red and green colored M&M’s.
