Make Your Own Citrus Body Scrub

Homemade body scrubs are a great way to give yourself a spa experience without the spa price tag. Their mixture of abrasiveness and moisturizing packs a double punch of exfoliation and hydration to leave your skin revitalized, smooth, and soft. I’ve been using my own homemade body scrub made with sea salt, almond oil, and peppermint essential oil whenever I want to give myself a little pampering.

I recently came across another recipe that was very close to my own mixture with one slight difference. Instead of using an essential oil, it used orange zest and lemon zest for fragrance. Clever!

So when it came time to mix up another batch of body scrub I decided to make a version with the zest instead of the essential oils and LOVED the results. It gave the scrub just the right little hint of fragrance and color. PLUS, it’s a great alternative if you don’t have any essential oils around the house.

If you’re not familiar with the term “Zest”, it’s simply the fine scrapings off the skin of a citrus fruit such as a lemon, lime, or an orange. You can use a zester which is a long, thin grater made specifically for that purpose, or you can just use the fine side of a cheese grater. And while this recipe calls for lemon and orange zest, I’m sure you could be creative and try different combinations using lime zest or grapefruit zest too.

Homemade Citrus Body Scrub Recipe

Inspired by:  Paula Deen Citrus Salt Body Scrub

You will need:
1/2 cup Sea Salt
1/4 to 1/2 cup Oil (such as as almond or olive)
1/2 tsp Orange Zest
1/2 tsp Lemon Zest

Place the sea salt in a small mixing bowl. Gradually add the oil, stirring as you go, until you reach a consistency that you like. Stir in the orange zest and the lemon zest. Keep in a container with a tight fitting lid. (This mixture fits very nicely into the 8 oz. half pint canning jars that are the short squatty type).

The body scrub is easiest to use in the shower. Use your fingers or a washcloth to scoop out some of the body scrub and apply and rub on your body in a circular motion. It will take several scoops to give yourself an “all over” scrub. Then rinse off , and exit the shower and dry yourself as usual.

This body scrub makes a great gift too!
