This week Dawson came to visit. Who is Dawson? He is my sweet friendly grand-dog. Too soon for grandkids yet so I spoil the grand-dog instead 🙂

Homemade Dog Biscuits

This was the perfect excuse to try out a recipe for some homemade dog treats. I mixed up a batch of dough, cut it into cute little bone shapes, and then presented them to Dawson for his taste testing and approval.

Did Dawson like his homemade dog biscuits? Oh yeah, he gobbled them up. Is there anything Dawson would not gobble up? Hmmmmm not sure.

This dough mixed together well, rolled out well, and I had everything on hand needed to make them at the spur of the moment.

*I love when that happens *

HOMEMADE DOG BISCUITS

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup boiling or very hot water with 3 beef bouillon cubes dissolved in it
  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour

Combine the boiling beef broth water with the cup of oats and the butter in a large mixing bowl. Let it set for a few minute for the butter to melt and the oats to soften.

Add in the milk, peanut butter, egg, cornmeal and sugar. Mix well.

Next, mix in the whole wheat flour one cup at a time. For the addition of the last cup of flour, I switched to using my hands to mix it in and to knead the mixture into a soft dough.

Roll out to about a 1/4″ thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out the dough.  Lay on ungreased cookie sheets. You can lay them pretty close together as they do not spread out while baking.

Bake at 325 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. Store in airtight container far out of the reach of hungry dogs.

I had previously purchased a “pet theme” cookie cutter set at Michaels Craft Store that had a bone shaped cookie cutter in it. The set cost $4.99 but I had a handy 50% off coupon.

You can also use any regular shaped cookie cutter or check out the links below for online options:

  1. It's so funny that you posted this today, because I was just thinking about making homemade doggie treats for my dog! Yours look so cute in the bone shape…. mine, probably not so much!
