Give yourself a spa experience at home by making your own homemade body scrub. Body scrubs, which are slightly abrasive, exfoliate your skin leaving it softer and smoother. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells sitting on the top layer of skin by gently rubbing the skin with a mild abrasive.
There are a variety of homemade body scrub recipes but they all follow the same basic process. They either use sea salt or sugar as the abrasive, combine it with an oil for moisturizing, and then add essential oils or spices for fragrance. You can use the readily available olive oil in your mixture, or you can go for something more exotic like jojoba oil or avocado oil. Some recipes will give you exact measurements, but many recipes simply have you combine the ingredients to a consistency of your liking.
Here’s the mixture I use. I like the scrubbing power of the salt, the moisture seal of the almond oil, and the refreshing scent of the peppermint.
BEV’S BODY SCRUB
Peppermint Essential Oil
Jar or other container with tight fitting or screw-on lid
Pour some of the sea salt in your container (do not fill more than 3/4 full so you have room to stir). Pour in enough oil so that it just starts covering the salt. Stir to combine. You can always add a little more salt if you feel it is too soupy. Add 5 to 10 drops of the peppermint essential oil and stir. Once it is all mixed together you can put the lid on your container for storage.
I use my body scrub in the shower by scooping a little bit into my hand and then rubbing it on my skin. (Of course it takes several scoops to do your whole body). Using it in the shower makes it easy to rinse off.
A Few More Notes . . .
- Caution! – The oil in this mixture can make the floor of the shower a little slippery. It’s helpful to be standing on a rubber bath mat in the shower when using your scrub.
- Body scrubs make nice gifts too! Just add a ribbon and a label to your jar.
- I found my almond oil at a local health food store but if you can’t find it near you it can also order almond oil on Amazon.
